Stephanie Burns, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Dow Corning, to Receive CDMA's 2008 Executive Excellence Award

Following an annual tradition dating back to 1950, the CDMA (Commercial Development & Marketing Association) has formally recognized an industry leader who has made an outstanding contribution in the field of commercial development and who exemplifies CDMA’s commitment to innovation and business building.

It will be CDMA’s honor and pleasure to present Stephanie Burns with the 2008 Award for Executive Excellence at the CDMA National Meeting on May 20 in Philadelphia. Stephanie Burns will be recognized for her passion for innovation, talent for recognizing global opportunities, and vision for combining the scientific and social benefits of chemistry that have led to successful, sustainable business growth at her company.

Stephanie A. Burns is chairman, president and chief executive officer of Dow Corning Corporation in Midland, Michigan, a global leader in silicon-based technology with 25,000 customers worldwide and 2007 sales of $4.9 billion. She joined Dow Corning in 1983 as a researcher working on water-based and high temperature elastomers. Later she became product development manager for the Electronics Industry, where she led advances in UV curable coatings and materials for device protection and electronics adhesives.  She became director of Women’s Health in 1994. In 1997 she moved into corporate management as Science and Technology director for Europe and later, she became industry director for Life Sciences in Europe, and also for the European Electronics Industry.  In December 2000, she returned to the United States to become executive vice president responsible for global operations.  At that time, she was also elected to Dow Corning’s Board of Directors and served on the Board’s Audit and Corporate Responsibility committees.  In February 2003, Dr. Burns was elected president and chief operating officer; in January 2004, chief executive officer, and in January 2006, she was elected chairman.

Dr. Burns is a member of the American Chemical Society and sits on the executive committee of the Society of Chemical Industry. She serves on the Board of Directors for GlaxoSmithKline plc., and of the Michigan Molecular Institute. Burns is also a board member of the American Chemistry Council, and The Conference Board. Under her leadership, Dow Corning sponsors the annual ICIS Innovation Awards which highlight chemical companies or collaborations which have made tangible results through innovation.

Dr. Burns, a staunch advocate for science, math and technology education to ensure the strength and vitality of global society, was recognized with the 2006 Vanguard award, by the Chemical Education Foundation. Burns has also been recognized as Michigan Woman Executive of the Year and has been named to Forbes list of Most Powerful Women. Under her leadership, Dow Corning has earned honors as 2005 Specialty Chemicals Company of the Year by leading global growth consultancy Frost & Sullivan, and has been named to Fortune magazine’s 100 Best Companies to Work for.

The 2008 Award for Executive Excellence will be accepted for Dr.Burns by Scott E. Fuson, Vice President Specialty Chemicals and Global Executive Director Life Sciences. He will speak about smart innovation & sustainability as a focus for growth at Dow Corning.
